The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current level of the item being upgraded however, they will always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment from other sources. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item from another player will cost 105. Valorstones Upgrades are items that can be used to improve the quality of weapons, tools, armor, and other accessories. They can be purchased by players from item upgraders NPCs for various currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will display the item's next level of upgrade, if there are enough materials. Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot for the item and the current item level. For instance weapons cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades give a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price. Upgraders for items are available in many places, including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount and the chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded, and can be increased by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests. Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only available through a variety means. This is both a benefit as well as an issue. In Season 3 the upgrade system has been modified a bit, and some new features added. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a certain level for an item in an armor slot, upgrading additional items to that same item level will be less expensive, even if they belong to another set of gear. The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is account-wide. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is reduced as well, but is only available once certain milestones are reached. Crests Players have several options for upgrading their gear in WoW. They can choose to use Flightstones which are a common upgrade currency available to everyone, or crests, which are more specific and consumed during upgrades at specific levels of items. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks. The first thing to remember is that Crests are only available to equipment that is of a particular rank. Each rank has distinct upgrade paths. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, based on the kind of gear being upgraded. Players can earn crests through finishing content at the appropriate level. This could be by doing outdoor activities, or by taking on dungeons and raids of all difficulty levels to obtain lower-level gear or Mythicbosses for raids, or dungeons that have a high difficulty to obtain endgame gear. Crests can be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade paths and steps. The use of these currencies isn't too difficult, but the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. Once a piece of gear attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it will no longer require Flightstones. This change allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot. Another notable modification is that crests have one usage and it's crucial to use them wisely. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear you can find, and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is especially applicable to rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character which will only be able to avail the account-wide discount when all slots are filled with top-quality gear.
